#BIRTHDAY2013

Like the old me, I was not expecting to have a “grand” celebration for my birthday. The fact that I’m having my birthday in another country is quite a feat already. But, the impulsive me thought of wandering the city of Daegu alone, a day before my birthday. I also planned to check in a cheap hostel that night and just comeback to Gumi on my actual birth day, which is November 3rd. That sounds like an adventure… or not.

Anyway, on November 2nd, I visited Daegu and spent the whole day there (I shall write this as another blogpost.). It was quite a “celebration” already for me since I met Korean friends that I wasn’t expecting. Before watching a movie, we had a dinner at some restaurant downtown. It was a smothered pork stew dish that I forgot the name for the nth time. We watched Thor afterwards at 4D, fucking 4D guys, 4D. It was beyond awesome. Chairs moving. Air pressure valves shooting to my ears. Water sprinkling in front of my face. Some punching actions happening at my back. And sweet scent during Thor and Jane’s kissing scene. 4D indeed! Then, we hopped into a drinking place which specializes on Mcggeorie (rice wine) and spent the rest of the night there before I helplessly dragged myself to my hostel because of being “drunk.”

Fastforward to November 3rd, I woke up early (like 7:30 am) and had a quick shower. I grabbed my free breakfast (some toast and jam, coffee, and tea) at that hostel whilst reading and responding to birthday greetings on facebook. I was running on 4 hours of sleep but hey, I was able to survive train rides and bus rides. I took a shower again right after arriving at my dormitory then resumed to responding to those heartwarming messages.

I received a Kakao message from my Malaysian friend (Naimah) that we shall meet 4 pm. I agreed since it was planned that I shall take them to a pizza dinner or what. We were talking on our way and little did I know that we were heading to the Cheo un dae. And there I was surprised with these bunch of guys!

These guys are the craziest. I am very thankful to have met these friends. They kind of fulfill my longing for my friends back in the Philippines. With them, my birthday had been extra special. I mean, it wasn’t the grandest of all surprises to many, but for me, this is one of the books.

We went to a small Indonesian restaurant just here in Gumi for dinner. If you haven’t seen the list, well a bunch of the top delicious food in the world are from Indonesia (nasi goreng, rendang, satay, etc.) so I guess this isn’t a bad choice at all.

More than this sumptuous meal, I am so much happier because I was not really expecting this kind of day at all. It will surely be one of the best memories that I’ll be bringing back in the Philippines. For the nth time, I shout thanks and hugs to my friends here in Korea. Kamsahamnida! ^^

  1. happy birthday! and wow that chocolate cake looks absolutely amazing! definitely making me crave chocolate haha

  2. Happy belated birthday. I’ve never visited outside of California. Well, if you count Nevada as traveling outside of California? But I really don’t count that as traveling. I’ve heard that in certain parts of the Philippines there are some cannibals that reside there? I heard that it was a false statement to scare me. Anyway, I really don’t consider Harukami a book if that is manga? Manga is okay – but I prefer real books to Japanese anime (sorry that’s just me though – not bashing!).

    1. Ohhhh. That’s definitely not true. There are no cannibals in the Philippines. Not even close. Haha! Anyway, Haruki Murakami is a Japanese author. I really like his books. The simplicity and finesse of writing just gets me in. He does not write manga anyway. But he writes for newyorker.com, some fiction articles. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, thank you so much for the greeting Jamie!

  3. I want a slice of that cake please. Oops, too late now!!

Anyway, belated happy birthday to you Chester! πŸ™‚ Obviously it looks that you did have a blast. Just celebrating it in another country alone is a cool factor already. πŸ˜›

  4. The best days come unexpectedly, as what they say. It was the grandest of all gestures nga e. You’re lucky to have friends like them in a short span of time.

Belated happy 21st birthday, oppa! Hehehehe πŸ™‚

  5. Many, many happy returns Chester! Wow what a day to remember: Friends, 4D (OMG), cake, great food! And here I was happy with watching Gravity on 3D! But, then again, there isn’t any sweet smelling perfume in space is it? :-))

  6. It sounds like you had a really great time, that is wonderful.

Ahh, all the cake and food looks delicious and seeing a movie in that way would have been amazing!

  7. Belated happy birthday!!!! It looks and sounds like you had a blast on your birthday! I bet it’s kind of scary to be away from home on a very special day, good thing you have such awesome friends to share the day with.

  8. Maligayang Kaarawan!! I know how important birthdays and celebrations are, so it warms my heart to see that you had a great one. Sometimes the unexpected journeys are the most memorable ones.

  9. Your birthday looked like it was a super awesome time! All that food looks amazing. Mmmm. I’m hungry now, LOL. πŸ˜› I’m also kinda jealous you got to see Thor in 4D! I wanna see it so badly, but I’m broke. 😦

I hope my birthday is good. But so far my only plans are; baking myself a red velvet cake, going out for dinner with my boyfriend and seeing The Hobbit.

    Happy belated birthday! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Deedee for the greetings!

Watching a movie in 4D here in Korea is much the same as watching a 3D film in the Philippines so I did not mind the price.

And hey, I hope you’ll have a good one too. Your idea sounds good. Red velvet cakes are too die for and it would be extra awesome with a movie with your boyfie. When is your birthday though?

  10. Hi Chester! Thank you for visiting my blog and commenting on it, it’s nice to meet you.
Glad you had a wonderful birthday, and wow, you watched Thor in 4D? That’s amazing! My own experience watching a film in 4D back in 2011 was while I was visiting the UK and it was awesome. πŸ™‚

    Happy belated birthday!

      1. It was just a short 15 min. animated film of DC and Marvel heroes together. Quite cool especially the bit where Spiderman was shooting webs from his hand and suddenly a jet of water hit my face. Really good. πŸ˜€

  11. Great pics. You have so perfect funny faces on some photos. πŸ˜€ Happy birthday, of course. πŸ™‚
Thanks for comment on my blog. πŸ™‚

  12. Happy birthday Ches! πŸ˜€ Thanks for dropping by mine too. Anyhoo, you have got to give me some of that cake. πŸ˜› Haha kidding. But anyways, I think it’s great that you’re spending your birthday in a different country! My boyfriend and I are actually looking into visiting Korea this December.

    1. Thanks for the greeting Aileen! It’s too late. The cake’s gone. Haha! It would be great if you will visit Korea this December but prepare for winter, I guess. It’s really cold in here right now.

  13. Wow. I can’t even imagine myself celebrating my birthday outside the country. What a birthday celebration you have! It’s really fun when you’re with your friends. But doesn’t it feel ‘kulang’ without your family? Hehe.

  14. Happy belated birthday! It looked like you were having an awesome time. That food looks really good. That huge jug, I’m guessing, was full of booze, eh? You lucky, lucky man.

These photos turned out awesome, too. Very crisp, very good focus, and great subject matter. Keep doing you!

  15. Wow! Just wow! You really have good friends out there even you are in a foreign land. That is such a blessing. Looks like you had an awesome celebration. I’ll jest send you my late wishes. Belated Happy Birthday. I wish you happiness and good health.

    1. If not, I’ll type it again. Lol. Now I sure does feel to type the same thing so it’ll be a different one, ha!

Chez, you are blessed with really good friends. So cherish and treasure them. And I’m sure they feel the same way towards you that’s why they threw a surprise celebration. Now you won’t feel as home-sick. πŸ™‚

Belated Happy Birthday. I wish you happiness and good health. Greetings from Kentucky.

      Great video work btw.

  16. Amazing – you have some wonderful friends. I am really happy for you that they surprised you and gave you a wonderful time for your birthday. Also, happy birthday to you of course! πŸ™‚

I’m a little thrilled you consider Indonesian food some of the best, I’m part Indonesian myself but never felt any kind of pride for being part of the culture. So that was really nice to hear.

Toast looks yummy. I love plain toast haha. Also I haven’t ever seen a 4D movie, since I don’t really enjoy watching movies, but your experience reminds me of those 4D rides at theme parks where you get water splashed on you and chairs shaking and stuff like that. πŸ˜›

    1. Thanks for those greetings Georgie! I agree that these friends made my day extra special.

Yes, even instant noodles, Indonesian brands are atop. I am really looking forward to visitng Indonesia really soon.

When I first heard of 4D, I thought of the same thing actualy. But the experience was more than that and it was beyond awesome.

  17. Happy Belated Birthday Dude! It really shows that you had lots of plan back there. Meeting new friends in a new place is surely a wonderful experience during your birthday. I want to try 4D movie. I am fed up with 3D here so for a change. Is ir more expensive compared to 3D ba?

  18. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog, Chester. So, you really had a great birthday celebration there. I wish mine was as awesome as that too. I always wish to celebrate my birthday in snow, cuz I don’t know there’s some excitements when playing with snow, although I never had a chance before, ahaha.

    Cheers πŸ™‚ x
